Two Sauces To Try On Your Next Pizza

One of the most important aspects of any pizza is the sauce that you put on it. The default option is a tomato-based marinara sauce, but there are many other good options. Each one of these choices will significantly impact the flavor of your pizza. In fact, it may be the most important choice you make when you decide what you want your pizza to taste like. Here are a couple of options to make your pizza taste amazing:

Alfredo sauce

  • 100 grams of Parmesan-Reggiano cheese
  • 240 milliliters of heavy cream
  • 100 grams of unsalted butter
  • 3 grams of kosher salt
  • 2 grams of freshly ground black pepper

Melt the butter over medium heat in a skillet and add the heavy cream. Stir constantly until the cream and butter mixture is simmering. Add the Parmesan-Reggiano cheese and continue stirring constantly until the cheese is completely melted and combined with the butter and cream. Take the sauce off the heat and stir in the salt and pepper, adjusting for your specific tastes.

Alfredo sauce is fabulous for many different kinds of pizzas, but it goes especially well with a Hawaiian (ham and pineapple), cheese, or spinach pizza. Another option to consider is mixing your Alfredo sauce with a marinara sauce on top of a pizza for an extra creamy treat.

Pesto sauce

  • 25 grams of fresh basil leaves
  • 3 cloves of freshly crushed garlic
  • 240 milliliters of extra virgin olive oil
  • 45 grams of pistachios 
  • 2 grams of kosher salt
  • 1 gram of fresh ground black pepper
  • 1/2 gram of ground red pepper

Heat the olive oil in a pan and keep it warm. Add the nuts, pepper, salt, red pepper, basil, and garlic to a food processor. Add the warm olive oil and pulse until everything is completely blended together. Scrape the pesto out of the blender and put it back over medium heat for 5 minutes to roast the garlic and cook the basil. 

Pesto is a wonderful accompaniment to many meat-based pizzas. Consider making a pesto pizza and using mozzarella and diced chicken pieces on top. Another great option would be to use it as the base for a meatball or multiple meat pizza. 

As you change around the sauce on your pizzas, you will find that branching out into these different options gives you a great way to have a new twist on this quintessential Italian dish.
